Care & Support Services

St. Vincent de Paul Society

The St Vincent de Paul Society is a lay Catholic organisation that aspires to live the gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice, hope and joy, and by working to shape a more just and compassionate society.

The Society wants to be recognised as a caring Catholic charity offering "a hand up" to people in need. We do this by respecting their dignity, sharing our hope, and encouraging them to take control of their own destiny.

For many years, the society has had an active group of members and volunteers in the parish helping families in need with food hampers, items of furniture and other goods, helping with transport and other requests, as appropriate.

Meetings are held every Tuesday night at  7pm in the Parish centre.

Monday to Friday every week two members are on call each day to respond to calls received from the Society's head office to assist families who need urgent delivery of food or help with finance problems etc. in the Perth region. This area extends well beyond the parish.

A food pantry is located in the Parish Centre and once a month the parishioners are asked to donate items to maintain stocks in the pantry. On occasion, food hampers are supplemented by issuing vouchers purchased by the Society from Coles Supermarkets that can in turn be redeemed for food and special items e.g., for babies/children.

The Society also has a group of auxiliary members who look after transport arrangements to bring to/from mass on weekends residents in the Quadriplegic Centre in Shenton Park.

St Vincent de Paul have a clothing store located at 334 Cambridge Street, Wembley.

Enquires regarding St Vincent de Paul in the parish should be directed to Ivan Colgan on telephone 9387 1475

Pons ad libertatum Inc.  [PAL]

Pons ad libertatum or PAL translates as "Bridge to freedom". It formally started in the Parish in 2004 when Dan Ryan (RIP) and Vin Warrener (retired) were particularly active in setting up PAL as an incorporated body which permits us to receive tax deductible donations. However, informal work began with Father Paul Fogarty assisting African students (at the local tertiary institutions) who needed help. When the Edith Cowan campus shifted away from Floreat our focus shifted to more general refugee support especially for those in our Parish seeking permanent residency for themselves and their families.

Currently, PAL sees its role as providing any form of social, material, advisory help that will assist families become united in Australia and eventually happily settled.

Three families in particular have made the change from extremely difficult circumstances in their home countries and, thanks to many in the Parish, are building new lives in Australia. While our focus is mainly on persons with a direct Parish connection, PAL also responds to similar needs elsewhere. That is why we will always be reliant on the generosity of parishioners.

The PAL committee comprises a group of 5 parishioneers who oversee it's operations.

Meetings: On demand or bi-monthly; second Tuesday at 6pm; Parish Centre.

If you would like to assist PAL or would like any additional information, please contact the Parish Secretary on 9387 1158.
